ADDITIONAL NOTES -
With regards to fuel lines, we pulled the text below from the internet in 2025, this is copy paste and not our opinion, but you might find helpful, but always do your own research. Below is a basic guide and will likely change over time so do not take the text below as concrete and final
Whether you have to use ISO 7840 hose depends entirely on where your boat is used and if it needs to comply with specific safety regulations:
When it is mandatory:
- Inland Waterways (UK): Yes, for most private boats on UK inland waterways, the Boat Safety Scheme (BSS) mandates that all flexible fuel hoses within the permanently installed system must be marked as meeting a fire-resistant standard such as BS EN ISO 7840 Type A1, SAE J1527, or an equivalent. If you want a BSS Certificate (which is usually required for licensing your boat with navigation authorities like the Canal & River Trust), you must use the correct hose
- Recreational Craft Directive (RCD): New boats sold within the EU/UK must comply with the RCD, which specifies the use of ISO 7840 or equivalent hoses for permanently installed fuel systems to meet safety standards and receive CE marking
- Insurance: Many marine insurance providers will require that your vessel meets all relevant safety standards (like the BSS or RCD). Using non-compliant hose could potentially void your insurance coverage in the event of a fire or fuel-related incident
When it might technically not be mandatory:
- Un-coded Recreational Craft (Coastal/Offshore): For un-coded recreational craft operating purely offshore or in areas not subject to BSS regulations, there might not be a specific legal mandate from a single authority to use only ISO 7840 hose
- Small Outboard Motor Connections: Hoses located entirely within the splash well at the stern, connected directly to an outboard engine, are generally exempted from the ISO 7840 requirement
When it comes to the fuel tank size for the air heater regulations and practical recommendations both play a role.
Regulatory Requirements (UK/BSS):
The Boat Safety Scheme (BSS) and other regulations have specific safety requirements, but they don't generally mandate a minimum or maximum size for the tank itself. Instead, the rules focus on the type of installation:
- Tanks 10 Litres or Less: If you use a separate, dedicated fuel tank with a capacity of 10 litres or less, the fuel line connections do not have to be securely installed to the full BSS standard (push-fit connections with spring clips might be acceptable, provided there are no leaks).
- Tanks Over 10 Litres: For any tank larger than 10 litres (including connection to the boat's main diesel tank), all components and connections in the fuel line must meet the full BSS requirements, including secure, robust installation, fire-resistant hoses (ISO 7840), and appropriate filters.
Important Caveat: While these exceptions exist, any flexible hose in the actual fuel supply and return lines of an inboard or permanently installed system running through an enclosed space (like an engine bay or cabin) must meet the fire-resistance requirement of ISO 7840 (or an equivalent standard like SAE J1527 A1) to pass safety inspections like the BSS or comply with the RCD
For maximum safety and broad compliance, it is always best practice to use certified, fire-resistant marine fuel hose
